Heart-Healthy Tips!

Heart-Healthy Tips!

Jan 31, '20
It’s February and the month of all things heart-related!  Beyond Valentine’s Day flowers and chocolates, we wanted to share a few ways to stay heart-healthy. After all, you want to be spending many more special occasions with the ones you love!

  1. Visit your doctor!
You need to have a baseline screening, especially for diabetes. Most people don’t even know they have it, and it can sometimes be treatable with a better diet and more exercise—things you can work on. High blood sugar damages the arteries and increases your chance of heart disease.
  2. Get some sleep!
Aim for at least 7 hours. Not only will you have more energy and a clearer mind, but there are also actual physical health benefits, like less calcium in your arteries. Make sure your sleep is good sleep, too! If you’re restless, struggling, or staring at the ceiling counting sheep all night, check-in with your doctor.
  3. Eat real, healthy food!
And limit the drinks—not only alcohol, but also sugary drinks like soda and fruit juices. These drinks add calories quickly, but they don’t provide any nutritional value, so you’re eating more food anyway. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds should be at the top of your grocery list.
  4. Be happy!
Your heart thrives when you are doing things you enjoy and spending time with people you love—perfect for Valentine’s Day. Laugh with your friends, practice yoga or meditation--whatever makes you happy. It’s good for you!
  5. Get moving!
Literally, every step counts! Whether it’s standing at your desk instead of sitting, parking a little farther from your destination, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, it adds up. It’s not enough to exercise for 30 minutes a day and then sit the rest of the time. Make it a point to keep moving! (Bonus if you have your Armpocket on so your phone can track your steps!)
So this Valentine's Day, what about making heart-healthy plans? A special hike? A couples massage for extra relaxation? A healthy cooking class? Let us know how you practice a little self-love!
